The Air Conditioning Systems and Services business of Ingersoll Rand provides heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems that enhance the quality and comfort of the air in homes and buildings around the world. Its offerings, under the Trane and American Standard Heating & Air Conditioning brands, include energy efficient systems, service and parts support and advanced building controls.

Positon Description
This position is for an experienced Ruby on Rails developer or an energetic, highly competent Java developer with a background in web services who wants to become an expert Ruby on Rails developer in a dynamic environment. You will be responsible for leading technical development of highly scalable web services, mobile platform integration (IOS, Android, Blackberry, etc), and interfacing with wireless home automation devices to allow customers around the world to remotely manage their homes from web pages or mobile apps.

This position will set the design and development strategy for both internal and external Software Development Teams globally for the Connected Home Solutions business. These teams are responsible for web based software systems development in Ruby on Rails and J2EE, embedded controls in locks and thermostats, mobile applications, software tools and testing. The teams are responsible for maintaining and improving the quality, security, feature sets, and cost of the systems. This position will require both technical leadership and collaboration skills. Interaction and collaboration with the Software Development Leader, Information Technology Team, Network Operations, Hardware Development Teams, Customer Support Center, Field Services, Network Testing, Product Management, and customers will be needed to be successful. Principal duties and responsibilities include:
  • Act as the final decision authority on software architecture and design considering input from all stakeholders.
  • Develop software architectural designs to optimize Customer Engagement, Quality, Reliability, Development Cost, Operational Cost, Scalability, and Extendibility
  • Establish coding standards, conduct code reviews and risk assessments.
  • Develop code for key system components.
  • Provide technical interface with Information Technology, Marketing, Field Operations Excellence, Operations, customers, and suppliers
  • Mentor the development staff to ensure continuous development of technical skills.
  • Participate in Standards committees, other industry groups, and Ingersoll Rand enterprise wide technical councils as the technical voice of the Connected Home Business.
  • Act as a key advisor to the business leadership team on software technology strategy.

Requirements:
  • BS in computer science or computer engineering or equivalent experience required, advanced degree desired.
  • Able and willing to quickly learn new technologies and master them.
  • Results oriented with strong customer focus and good communication skills.
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in software development of complex systems across multiple development platforms (including Linux). Minimum 6 years' Ruby on Rails and/or Java experience.
  • Experience with software revision control systems (Git preferred)
  • Experience with unit/acceptance testing, and refactoring
  • Experience using agile product development processes and tools
  • Knowledge of overall system architecture concepts including Web and Mobile UI, server database configurations, internet communication protocols, and embedded controls.
  • Software requirements development, design, testing, and qualification experience required.
  • Familiar with system vulnerabilities, security methods, and security testing.
  • Proven technical leadership experience and skills

Desired:
  • Web application development using Ruby on Rails
  • Experience with Javascript and Javascript frameworks (jquery, backbone, etc)
  • Experience with SASS, HAML, Coffeescript.
  • Experience with software video encoding.
  • Experience with designing secure online transactions
  • Understanding of Server side system design parameters [load balancing, DB optimization, etc]
  • Understanding of design and development of mobile applications (Apple, Blackberry, Android and others)
  • Zwave wireless communications experience
  • Experience with message-based architectures and messaging systems such as ActiveMQ or RabbitMQ
  • MySQL database optimization experience
